The key scientific papers for CAROL Bike and especially the REHIT workout are:
- Towards the minimal amount of exercise for improving metabolic health: beneficial effects of reduced-exertion high-intensity interval training (Metcalfe et al. 2011). This was the study that established REHIT and led us to develop CAROL Bike.
- Twelve Weeks of Sprint Interval Training Improves Indices of Cardiometabolic Health Similar to Traditional Endurance Training despite a Five-Fold Lower Exercise Volume and Time Commitment (Gillen et al. 2015). This was another foundational study led by Prof. Gibala, who is probably the leading researcher in this field. The study and his book The One Minute Workout got a lot of press coverage.
- Effect of Number of Sprints in an SIT Session on Change in V˙ O2max: A Meta-analysis (Vollaard et al. 2017). This is a very useful meta-analysis of studies on Sprint Interval Training that concluded that more or longer would not lead to better results.
- Reduced Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training is More Effective at Improving Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Cardiometabolic Health than Traditional Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training (Cuddy et al. 2019). This was a study comparing REHIT on CAROL Bike to moderate intensity continuous training. This was commissioned independently by the American Council on Exercise and conducted by Prof. Lance Dalleck at Western University Colorado. We refer to this study frequently in our communications.
- The Metabolic Responses and EPOC of CAROL: an AI-Powered Exercise Bike (Dalleck et al. 2021). This is a study investigating the afterburn created by CAROL Bike workout (REHIT and Fat Burn), conducted by Prof Dalleck.
- Twelve weeks of sprint interval training increases peak cardiac output in previously untrained individuals (Bostad et al. 2021). This is a newer follow up study led by Prof Gibala that shed more light into the various adaptations follow sprint training, including an increase in cardiac output.
- Reduced-Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training (REHIT): A Feasible Approach for Improving Health and Fitness? (Vollaard, Metcalfe 2024). The paper provides a comprehensive overview and critical discussion of the scientific evidence of the efficacy, feasibility and acceptability, and effectiveness of REHIT.
